Jonathan Alder Junior High Students recently entered Thanksgiving Break by participating in their annual Service Learning Day. This day is designed to include valuable lessons surrounding service, community, empathy, and commitment.
Our district keynote speaker was Mr. Chris Nikic. Chris is the first person with Down syndrome to complete a full Ironman triathlon, along with a number of other incredible accomplishments. He spoke with our students about his school experience and his inspiration to establish his 1% Better philosophy. He shared how his commitment to this mentality has helped him to overcome many of life’s challenges, and he inspired our students to make similar commitments in their own lives. Following his presentation, 8th grade students had the opportunity to meet in smaller breakout sessions with Chris and his dad to learn more and ask questions about his journey.
“Chris Nikic was somebody who was able to show that even with all of the challenges that we face, there’s always a way to overcome them!,” said 8th grader, Reese Johnson.
Later in the day, students participated in a number of additional activities that included:
A gratitude brainstorm
Learning about the Free Little Library project
Making dog toys from recycled materials for a local animal shelter
Hearing about and meeting service and therapy dogs
Watching a movie focusing on empathy and inclusion of others with disabilities
Exploring seeds/plants that serve as natural pollinators
Making cards/decorations for local nursing home residents
Service Learning Day committee member and teacher Heather Lawson, commented, “Service is a rich part of Alder’s heritage, and this is always one of my favorite days of the year. We are at our best when we are serving, and it is so special to watch students give back to the community.”
The JAJHS Service Learning Day continues to be an impactful part of our students’ school year.
