Exciting transformation is occurring in Canaan Middle School’s outdoor spaces.
A cherished project that began as a simple idea, a Monarch Way Station, has blossomed into a vibrant habitat for monarch butterflies. This initiative, aimed at supporting these magnificent creatures during their migration, has not only enhanced the school grounds at CMS but also sparked a greater appreciation for nature among students.
The Monarch Way Station has also partnered with Jane Kutzley at the Madison County Master Gardener volunteers, as well as Yonie’s Greenhaus.
Building on this success, CMS is excited to announce the upcoming updates to the school courtyard. This transformation is driven by invaluable feedback from the community, reflecting a shared vision of creating an enriching outdoor learning environment. Our dedicated team of students, staff, and community members will collaborate to bring this vision to life.
“Much like the Monarch Way Station, the courtyard project is a testament to what we can achieve when we come together with a shared purpose,” stated CMS Principal, Rob Walter.
Amazon Web Services (AWS) is funding a large portion of the new courtyard, with the school also receiving donations from Canaan alumni, as well as volunteer time by the Boy Scouts of America Troop 117.
The courtyard will feature interactive learning stations, green spaces for relaxation and reflection, and areas designed to foster collaboration and creativity. It will serve as an extension of the classroom, offering hands-on learning experiences that connect students with nature and each other.
